      When discussing curtain wall systems, the mullion is often treated as one component of the aluminum framing. In practice, its role is much more important. It transfers loads from the façade system toward the building structure and works together with glass, transoms, brackets, fasteners, gaskets, pressure plates, and other components.

      That means a poor mullion selection may not cause an obvious problem during initial installation. Issues can emerge later in the form of excessive deflection, misaligned glazing, difficult transom assembly, water infiltration, or unwanted movement at connection and expansion joints.

      From a procurement perspective, asking whether a mullion is “strong enough” is usually too broad. A more useful evaluation considers the section geometry, alloy and temper, dimensions, tolerances, surface treatment, and connection interfaces together.

      What Does Good Aluminum Curtain Wall Mullion Installation Involve?

      Installation accuracy can have as much influence on façade performance as the extrusion itself.

      Before the mullions are installed, the site team needs to establish reliable reference points. Building grids, floor elevations, structural openings, and embedded plates or other connection locations should be checked against the approved drawings.

      The next step is usually bracket positioning. Brackets need to be located according to the structural and shop drawings while allowing for the required loads and movement of the curtain wall.

      The connection between the aluminum framing and the building structure cannot simply be treated as a rigid fixing point. Thermal expansion, structural tolerances, and movement within the curtain wall system all need to be considered in the connection design.

      Once the brackets are secured, the vertical mullions can be installed and adjusted.

      One practical point worth emphasizing is that vertical alignment should be checked throughout the installation process. Waiting until an entire façade section has been assembled before checking alignment can allow small errors to accumulate across multiple floors.

      Those accumulated deviations can become visible in the final façade and may also affect the installation of transoms and glazing components.

      Transom Alignment and Joint Movement Matter

      After the vertical mullions are positioned, horizontal transoms are connected between them. This stage is particularly sensitive to dimensional control because transom elevation determines the position of the horizontal glazing lines.

      If the connections are inconsistent, installers may encounter uneven glazing gaps or difficulties when fitting pressure plates, caps, gaskets, and glass.

      The specific fixing arrangement depends on the curtain wall system. Some systems connect mullions to concrete slabs through engineered brackets and anchors, while others use embedded plates or dedicated steel connection components.

      There is no universal fixing detail that should be applied to every façade. The connection should follow the structural design and approved curtain wall drawings.

      Movement joints are another area that deserves attention.

      Aluminum changes dimension with temperature. A curtain wall therefore needs suitable provisions for thermal movement instead of rigidly restraining every component.

      Gaskets, sealants, drainage channels, and interface joints must work as part of the same system. They need to limit water penetration while still allowing the movement anticipated by the design.

      This is why I would be cautious about evaluating a mullion simply by asking whether it is “easy to install.” The actual site performance also depends on dimensional tolerances, connection interfaces, machining accuracy, and the coordination between the profile and the rest of the curtain wall system.

      What Should Buyers Check When Purchasing Curtain Wall Mullions?

      The selected mullion needs to work with the intended transoms, brackets, glazing components, gaskets, pressure plates, and caps.

      Customization and technical support
      Non-standard curtain wall sections may require customized extrusion dies, engineering coordination, and production based on project-specific drawings.
